Tirthan Valley - A Paradise in Himachal

I am a person of the mountains and of open blue skies. I know I cannot stay away from them too long. Mountains have always left me feeling renewed, content and more positive. I found one such place in Tirthan Valley, Himachal Pradesh. Tirthan is gateway to The Great Himalayan National Park and is blessed with immense beauty. It's still not crowded, you can sit alone in the lap of nature and talk to yourself with no one disturbing you. Tirthan Valley borrow its name from Tirthan River, a tributary of Beas river which originates from the Himalayas.

I went there in start of June 2013. Green was the prime colour of the valley with clouds flirting with the mountains.

Round trip from Gurgaon to Tirthan is close to 1200 kms if you take the more secnic route from Shimla side and then crossing over Jalori Pass to enrter into Kullu.

Route taken was-

Gurgaon- Ambala- Dharampur- Kumarhatti- Chail- Narkanda- Ani- Jalori Pass- Jibhi- Nagini(Tirthan Valley)- Aut- Mandi- Ropar- Chandigarh- Gurgaon

For the less adventurous or if you want to avoid Jalori Pass you can take the following Route -

Gurgaon- Ambala- Ropar- Mandi- Larji - Nagini(Thirthan Valley)- Larji- Mandi- Ambala - Gurgaon

Started  from Gurgaon to reach Dharampur by evening. After a good sleep I started the journey ahead to reach Tirthan but nature had its own plans!!! As I reached Narkanda, the rain started to pour heavily. I decided to stay in Narkanda as climbing Jalori pass becomes very difficult when its raining.

Tented accommodation in Himachal Tourism Hotel Hatu

They have many rooms but just one tent and its beautiful. The tent is big and is neat and clean. You will not find it on their website and hence will not be able to make on-line booking. The only way is to get there and hope its not occupied.

After settling my stuff in the tent I ventured out on a small trek around the hotel. It turned out to be a rewarding decision. I got some beautiful views of the snow capped Himalayas.

I did nothing but rested, enjoyed the surroundings as someone has written beautifully , "Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time"

Got stuck on way for more than an hour due to landslide.

Jalori Pass is closed in winters and can be crossed over only in summers. It usually opens in Mid March and closed in December. The road going up to Jalori pass is tightly hair-pinned and has many sharp and blind curves. As many of you may agree, we men like curves and this is no exceptional case :) The views that you get from these curves makes up for what your car has to go thru crossing the treacherous road.

There are few restaurants or Dhabbas as we call them at Jalori Pass. They serve simple, basic but tasty food.

You can very well see the road condition in these two shots. It was still raining. I would strongly advice to be extremely careful while driving down and drive down on low gears specially is its raining.

Finally I reached small village named Nagini in Tirthan Valley which had to be my home for next 4 days. The shot above that you see is an evening shot taken from the rooftop of Khem Bharti Homestay called Hotel Trout Valley. Hotel Trout valley gets its name from the Trout fish found in adundance in Tirthan river which flows only at stone throw distance. It is said that during the british rule, the britishers found Tirthan River water so clear and thus suitable for Trout fish that they bought best seeds of fish from Scandinavian countries.

View From The Lobby

Isn't it Beautiful???

This was my room and what a view it had!!!! I had thought of hiking around but when I found my corner, It felt so complete.

Tirthan River

I loved Tirthan Valley more than I ever thought I would. The place is still not commercialised and acts as a base camp for some of the beautiful treks in the region. There are 2 beautiful waterfalls which can accessed by foot. I visited Tirthan around 2 years ago and never managed to finish the blog until one of my readers asked for a suggestion for a offbeat summer destination. Thanks Reader!!!

Ranthambore National Park- Land Of The TIGER!!!

It has been more than 2 months since I went to Ranthambore but had not been able to take out time to write and share my experience with you. This time I took train to Sawai Madhopur from Delhi. It's really convenient, just take an overnight train and by the time you wake up you are already in Sawai Madhopur.

Road distance between Delhi/Gurgaon and Ranthambore- 350Kms

Road Map between Delhi/Gurgaon and Ranthambore-

The road condition is good thru out with small bad patches here and there.

Kingfisher- Waiting for the Fish!!!

Water Snake

Spotted Deer- I can be spotted in Plenty!!!

Ranthambore National Park is hardly 10 kms drive from Sawai Madhopur railway station. It is located at the junction of the Aravalli and Vindhya hill range. I don't even remember how many times I have been to this park!!! I guess it should be close to 12-13 times. It always excites me, gives one the opportunity to connect back with nature. A boon for wildlife lovers.

It's the Land Of The Tigers!!! Though I was not lucky enough to sight one this time but that's how it is, this uncertainty keeps the interest alive. Here the King is the Tiger, he chooses to see you, you wander around the whole park hoping to be seen!!! It's said that Tigers of Ranthambore are the most camera friendliest Tigers in the world. I personally have sighted them many times  and sometimes for 25-30 mins in one go. Watching Tiger in the wild, in his own territory, is an experience of its own.  I did 4 safaris back to back this time. It is advisable to book your safari tickets well in advance by logging on to http://www.rajasthanwildlife.in/ .

Following are the park timings according to seasons :-

Apr 1-May 15:     6.00am- 9.30am & 3.00pm-6.30pm

May 16-Jun 30:    6.00am- 9.30am & 3.30pm-7.00pm

July 1 – Sep 30:     Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve CLOSED

According to me, the best time to go to the park is between April and June. This is the time when it gets really hot and the animals come out to quench their thirst at one of the three big lakes in the Park. These three big lakes are Padam Talab, Malik Talab and Raj Bagh. The park lies in Sawai Madhopur distt of Rajasthan covering a total are of 392 square Kms. The park is divided into 8 zones. You are alloted zone randomly right at the counter while they allot you the vehicle number. Zone 3 and 4 are my personal favoutires because of the 3 lakes they cover.  The presence of the these large water bodies gives us good chance to see number of birds in these zones. The most important birds in Ranthambore include Graylag Goose, Woodpeckers, Indian Gray Hornbills, Common Kingfishers, Bee Eaters, Cuckoos, Parakeets, Asian Palm Swift, Owl, Nightjars, Pigeon, Dove, Crakes, Snipes, Sandpipers, Gulls, Terns, Great Crested Grebe, Eagles, Darters, Cormorants, Egrets, Herons, Bitterns, Flamingos, Ibis, Pelicans, Storks, Pittas, Shrikes, Treepies, Crows, Orioles, Cuckoo-Shrikes, Minivets, Drongos, Flycatchers, Ioras, Wood Shrikes, Pipits, Bayas, Sparrows, Finches, Wagtails, Munias, Bulbul, Mynas, Falcons etc. Talking about animals, one can see Tigers, Leopards, Striped Hyenas, Sambar deer, Chital, Nilgai, Common or Hanuman langurs, Macaques, Jackals, Jungle cats, Caracals, Sloth bears, Black bucks, Rufoustailed Hare, Indian Wild Boar, Chinkara, Common Palm Civets or Toddy cat, Coomon Yellow Bats, Desert Cats, Fivestriped Palm Squirels, Indian False Vampires, Indian Flying Foxes, Indian Foxes, Indian Gerbilles, Indian Mole Rats, Indian Porcupines, Longeared Hedgehogs, Ratels, Small Indian Mongoose, Small Indian Civets and Common mongoose.

Back To Basics!!!!

The best way to see the park is to either take a Rickshaw or hire a bike if you love cycling. I went to the park three times back to back and tried both the options. Some of the rickshaw walas have very good knowledge about the birds, better than the guides too. If you planning to take a rickshaw, I would definitely recommend Mr Pritam Singh. He has vast knowledge of birds and the park. With him around you don't even need a guide. He has even been featured in few international magazines too. All the rickshaws have been given a serial number and his Serial no is 1, no doubt he deserves it!!! You can call him and book him in advance. He will come to your hotel to pick you up. So there's no need to take your vehicle to the park. His contact number is +91 9660167389
